“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” –Native American Proverb

The Township of Maplewood has a long tradition of leadership in environmental initiatives—from the 12-year old jitney program, to the recycling program and the new Police and Court Building which is the first green certified municipal public building in New Jersey.

Maplewood, New Jersey has made a commitment to a 20% community-wide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2015 (from 2006 levels).  A Climate Action Plan to reach this goal was developed by residents and the Environmental Advisory Committee. Maplewood's community-wide electricity use in 2008 was 6% lower than in 2006.
