The easiest option is to take advantage of your curbside recycling program.  You can check here for details on the schedule for your neighborhood.  

You can also take your recyclables to the Department of Public Works (359 Boyden Avenue) Monday-Friday 9 am-3 pm and Saturday 9 am until noon.

Batteries
Discarded batteries can release heavy metals into the environment. While disposable batteries are only a small portion of the total municipal solid waste stream, they are the single most concentrated source of mercury and cadmium.
You can take your used batteries to the Maplewood Department of Public Works (359 Boyden Avenue).

Bulk Pick-Up

Bulk Pick-Up (pickup of oversized items) is offered for both Waste Management and Waste Industries customers.  For details about Bulk Pick-Up days in Maplewood, please check the town's website.  Make sure you check the dates for the company which you use (Waste Management or Waste Industries).

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)
You need to take care when disposing of CFLs.  You can take them to the Maplewood Department of Public Works (359 Boyden Avenue) or to any Home Depot store.

Electronic Items
Maplewood and South Orange both have electronic recycling dates and residents can go to either facility.  The next date is October 24th (9 am-12 pm) at the DPW in Maplewood (359 Boyden Avenue) and then December 19 (9am-12pm) at the South Orange Recycling Center at 300 Walton Avenue (right below the Jersey Animal Coalition).

Packing Peanuts
Have packing peanuts and don't know what to do with them?  Take them to any UPS store. 

Plastic Bags
You can take plastic bags to most of our local grocery stores.

Refrigerators and Freezers
Don't know what to do with that old refrigerator or freezer now that you've bought your new energy-efficient model?  Have an old fridge in the basement or garage you never use and want to reduce your energy bill?  You can recycle those old clunkers!  Go here for more information.

Scrap Metal
Have some scrap metal and don't know how to dispose of it?  Take it to the Maplewood Department of Public Works (359 Boyden Avenue) or call the DPW between May 1st and October 13th to schedule a curbside pickup.  It's that easy!

Styrofoam/Polystyrene

You're so happy when you get that package and then you look at all the polystyrene that your beautiful gift or purchase was packaged in.  What to do?  Foam Pack Industries in Springfield will recycle your styrofoam/polystyrene.  You can call 973-376-3700 or go to theirwebsite.  Another alternative is to contact the Alliance of Foam Packing Recyclers and mail in your styrofoam/polystyrene for recycling.  As mentioned above, you can take your packing peanuts to Rocket Ship & Print in South Orange.  You can also take them to any UPS store.
